Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD, is the fifth president of Stony Brook University. An accomplished researcher himself, as well as a patent holder and a former leader of technology transfer, he brings an invaluable perspective to the emerging field of translational research. Dr. Stanley additionally is a strong advocate for federal funding of basic research and the role of university research in innovation and discovery. Here he discusses the critical importance of young researchers, their role in discovery and ensuring that they opportunities to participate in America’s research enterprise.
